OTTUMWA — The Market Street Bridge will be closing to all traffic on Monday for the deck replacement project.
The $2.9 million Market Street Bridge Deck Replacement Project consists of demolition of the existing bridge deck down to the piers. A new deck will be constructed with improved driving lanes, a wider pedestrian walkway and new decorative hand rail and lighting fixtures. The Market Street Bridge will remain closed until completion of the project, expected to be late fall 2014. Drivers will need to seek other routes during the extended bridge closure.
Iowa Bridge & Culvert of Washington, Iowa, is the contractor on the project. The Market Street Bridge Deck Replacement Project leverages nearly $2.5 million in state and federal funding. In addition, the Ottumwa Regional Legacy Foundation has committed up to $350,000 for decorative rail and lighting fixtures. Wapello County Trails Committee has pledged $40,000 for a wider walkway that will coordinate with the adjacent trail system.
The Market Street Bridge was built in 1971. The bridge has experienced accelerated deterioration over its lifetime. It's presently rated as structurally deficient and has a vehicle weight restriction that prohibits most vehicles larger than standard passenger vehicles.
