OTTUMWA — Customers in Ottumwa will see an improved shopping experience at ALDI, said an executive from the supermarket chain. They’re spending more than a billion dollars to modernize stores across the country.
Nancy Leonard of Ottumwa shops locally.
"The remodel will be great," she said. "I will have to stock up on things I can only get there when they close … to remodel the rest of the store."
"The Ottumwa store, located at 940 Quincy Ave., is scheduled to be remodeled [by] fall, as part of our $1.6 billion nationwide plan to enhance more than 1,300 U.S. stores," said Rob Jeffries, the O’Fallon Divi! sion vice president for ALDI.
In an email answering questions from the Courier, Jeffries said said the remodeled Ottumwa store will have five aisles and 12,053 square feet of sales floor space. Right now, the store has four aisles and 9,068

"The new look of our store will deliver on our customers’ desire for a modern and convenient shopping experience with a focus on fresh items, including more robust produce, dairy and bakery sections," he said.
He described the remodeled stores as having modern design, natural lighting and environmentally friendly building materials such as recycled materials, energy-saving refrigeration and LED lighting.
"We can’t wait to bring the new look of ALDI to shoppers who know and love us in Ottumwa, plus new fans, as we make more room for a larger selection of fresh products, plus customer favorites like organics, gluten-free foods and! premium baby items."
In Ottumwa, Leonard said while she "can’t wait" to see the results, ALDI didn’t need to improve. They’ve already got her business; she said she already "loves shopping there."
And shopping ALDI has become a family habit.
"My daughter comes from Albia to shop there," she said.
