The Wapello County Trails have been a source of natural entertainment for years. Recently, they have gotten even better.
Thanks to a Community Attraction and Tourism grant, the trails are now connected in a safer, more efficient way with a new tunnel built under US Highway 34. This underpass connects Ottumwa Park with Wayside Park for a seamless transition between trails.
People can enjoy easy hiking and biking along the 20 miles of paved trails along the scenic Des Moines River. Other attractions include the Eagle Walk along the river each year in January and February, and the mountain biking dirt trail that was added in 2013. This trail has even gotten four out of five stars on a popular trail review site.
