State of the Economy Address Garners High Praise from Attendees
Tuesday, August 14, 2018
Following OEDC's recent State of the Economy address, attendees were polled with the question "What were your first impressions of the presentation?" Overwhelmingly, the words creative, innovative, relevant, and timely rose to the surface.
The general topic focused on placemaking, which Mannheimer defines as "how you welcome the next generation of workforce while creating a vibrancy among those who have lived here all their lives. You want to avoid making current residents angry as you are creating amenities for new folks moving to the area."
"To some extent, his discussion focused on things Ottumwa has been doing for the last 4-5 years. There's no better example than when you look at downtown-the new storefronts, businesses, apartments, artwork, and now streetscaping. Projects and activities are really drawing people back to the downtown. It's clean, attractive, and best yet-increasing in value, which helps develop the tax base. Soon, Helgerson Flats will also be ready for new manufacturing growth" says Sharon Stroh, OEDC Executive Director.
Mannheimer stressed the need for cooperative leadership and agreed-upon priorities that could include riverfront development opportunities, housing, and talent attraction.
He adds "If there's a good idea that will generate a benefit, money doesn't have to be a problem."
