EPA Announces Brownfields Grant Program
Thursday, December 06, 2018
On November 28, 2018 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released new Request for Proposals & Application Guidelines to officially open the FY 2019 Brownfields Multipurpose, Assessment, and Cleanup Grant competition.
According to the EPA website, Assessment grants are designed for site-specific properties identified for redevelopment, including former industrial or commercial sites where future use is affected by real or perceived environmental contamination, and can be funded up to $600,000 over three years. Cleanup grants are eligible for up to $500,000 over three years.
In last year's brownfield competition... EPA awarded $54.3 million in funding to assess and clean up 144 communities nationwide. In 2019, $50 million is available.
"It's hard to know if OEDC will be seeking these kinds of grants in 2019 since the deadline is so soon (January 31), but for certain, we will prepare ourselves to be in a position to apply in 2020. Being able to review the requirements and partner with the professionals at Area 15 Regional Planning Commission will give our community a head start on developing a favorable proposal for a future submission. There is no reason for the greater Ottumwa area to consider themselves undeserving of this opportunity" says Executive Director Sharon Stroh.
